ICE
In sudden rush of frozen air
Of feathered crystal fall
Pale Sun is ghost, and ghost alone
The world come close and tangible
A globe of mist, of spectral pall
They stir on lost and lonely heights
Whilst tender valleys shiver close
Beneath the undiscovered land
Beneath the gaze of ancient eyes
Beneath the arc of ancient skies
Bone and sinew feel their touch
And spark & fall of laboured breath
A thousand jewels on leathern cloak
To tempt the children of the pines
Who bring with them the gift of sleep
With icy fingers soothe and stroke
In darkness, shot with cold blue fire
That dims to nothing and is gone
Leaves will turn, and turn, and fall
Slow caress of ice on flesh
Slow they watch ‘til flesh is stone
And stone is sand and all is done.
